Since 2009, WANETAM has worked to strengthen clinical research capacity across West Africa. Established through the EU’s EDCTP programme, the network has grown across three prior tranches of funding into one of the region’s most established platforms for multi-centre clinical research, career development, and research leadership training.
Along the way, WANETAM has built genome surveillance networks for multiple infections, established a network of data managers across partner institutions, and developed quality assurance systems for clinical trial laboratories throughout the network infrastructure that continues to underpin research across the region today.

To attain expertise in our network of West African institutions to conduct clinical trials, research, and control of poverty-related diseases such as Malaria, Tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.
Sub-Saharan Africa continues to face a heavy burden from poverty-related diseases, while the research capacity to address them remains uneven across institutions, individuals, and funding levels. WANETAM-4, funded through the EU’s Global Health EDCTP3 programme, builds on this foundation, now spanning 23 institutions across 12 countries, Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone alike, deliberately structured to overcome the linguistic barriers that have historically siloed collaboration across the region.
